2025 marks Ireland’s fourth year as part of European Sustainable Development Week. Ireland held its first SDG Week from 20-26 September 2022, with over 100 events taking place.  For SDG Week 2024, almost 200 events were organised across Ireland.

Events have covered a range of activities, workshops, discussions and webinars, across all aspects of the SDGs, from SDG awareness to sustainable fashion, upcycling to climate action, healthy eating to sustainable gardening, biodiversity to diversity and inclusion.

SDG Week in Ireland is run in association with the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment and the Library Services of Ireland.

SDG Week 2025 at the University of Galway

SDG week belongs to everyone and is open to all, including students, staff and community partners. As a national SDG Ambassador, we see this as an opportunity to act as an advocate and promoter of the SDGs, to raise awareness internally among our community of over 20,000 students and staff and to demonstrate by example that everyone can make a contribution to the UN SDGs.

Planning is underway for SDG Week 2025, which will take place from 20–27 September.

The theme for this year is: Local Action, Global Change – How Galway and the University Community Can Drive Meaningful SDG-Related Change.

The week will include:

  • Inspiring Voices – thought-provoking talks  with guest speakers.

  • Celebrating Sustainability – symbolic moments to mark our shared progress.

  • Community & Collaboration – opportunities to connect, co-create solutions, and participate in collective action.

  • Exploring & Experiencing – tours and activities that bring the SDGs to life across our campus.

  • Showcasing – research, projects, and creative initiatives demonstrating how the SDGs are shaping ideas and impact.

  • Shaping the Future – consultation and dialogue that invite students, staff, and community to help shape our next Sustainability Strategy.

  • Active Engagement – inclusive events and activities that encourage participation, wellbeing, and fun.

The full programme of events will be announced in early September 2025 and can be found here
